When we use the fine muscles of our face for expression eg smiling or frowning we cause the overlying skin to wrinkle. These can be seen as smile lines (or crows feet), frown lines, forehead lines etc. By injecting small amounts of muscle relaxing treatment in the form of a purified protein derivative which causes the muscle to relax by blocking nerve impulses. This in turn helps alleviate overlying wrinkles and softens deeper lines that have formed as part of our aging process.
Over time and with repeat treatments deeper lines will continue to improve and create a more youthful appearance. Wrinkle relaxers can also potentially help prevent new lines in developing or existing lines worsening. This treatment can also be use to correct certain facial characteristics eg brow lift, gummy smile and teeth grinding (bruxism) and help in alleviating excessive sweating in the arm pits (axillary hyperhidrosis).
Wrinkle relaxing injections have been used for over 20 years cosmetically and is a very safe and proven treatment. The actual treatment can take as little as 10-15 minutes following a consultation and takes 5-7 days to be effective (up to 2 weeks for full effect) and will generally last 4 months on average. There may be mild stinging/burning during treatment with temporary localised redness/swelling and occasional headache. Temporary weakening of surrounding muscles can occur and will resolve in a matter of days or a few weeks.
No long term ill effects have been reported but treatment should not be performed during pregnancy or breast feeding or with certain medical conditions.
